Elderly out-patients suffering from "age-associated memory impairment" given Piracetam showed significant improvement in memory consolidation and recall. Piracetam reversed typical EEG slowing associated with "normal" and pathological human aging, increasing alpha and beta (fast) EEG activity and reducing delta and theta (slow) EEG activity, while simultaneously increasing vigilance, attention and memory.

A key part of Piracetam's specialness is its amazing lack of toxicity. In clinical studies when giving Piracetam to animals (mice, rats and dogs), they found zero toxicity: 10gm PIR/kg body weight produced no LD50. What that means is LD50 (the term used to describe the point where 50% of test animals die at an LD or lethal dose), was zero. It is equal to giving a 154lb person about 1-1/2 pounds of Piracetam as one dosage. It means Piracetam is virtually "non-toxic". The study went on to show that after a year, there was no side effects, no birth defects, no behaviorial tolerance noted.

In one study, mice were given oxydipentonium which is a short-acting agent which stops breathing, at a dose which is sufficient to kill 90% of one test group and 100% of another, but in Piracetam treated mice there was a 90% and 100% survival rate. When substances, drugs or suppliments and Piracetam are taken together there is a synergistic effect that causes a greater effects than the sum of each when taken alone. This is true for other brain enhancing suppliments or even coffee.
